Reflections and Inspirations from My JoVE Customer Success Interview

An efficient recruitment process and impressive professionalism

I had an interview with JoVE in late May, completing 3 rounds including a presentation, in 8 days, and failed the final VP round. Despite the outcome, I truly appreciated how efficient and professional the entire process was.

Here are 3 strong impressions they left on me:

  • Response speed, brilliant

I devoted a lot of time and energy to JoVE's products and business, so I really need to document something that can support my further growth. Thank you and goodbye, JoVE.

My understanding of JoVE's products

JoVE focuses on visualizing science for better research and education.

Having gone through a similar pain point in my own research, I feel a deep alignment with JoVE's mission. During my postgraduate years, I had to onboard myself independently through raw text and vague instructions, and later guide other juniors in my research group—such a challenging time. Back then, I hadn't known about JoVE, so I had always imagined a product that could truly visualize research workflows.

It's inspiring to see that such a solution already exists. Brilliant. I sincerely hope it continues to make an impact.

My understanding of the Customer Success role

It's my first time approaching a Customer Success role, but it seems to fit me well, because technical aspects are not difficult for me and I have the ability to naturally inspire trust in face-to-face meetings.

Customer Success is about proactively turning access into real adoption and measurable impact, far beyond product support. It requires understanding the specific challenges of different stakeholders and tailoring solutions as required.

A product extension thought inspired by JoVE

When I think about your products, another idea comes to mind subconsciously: now that you have high-quality videos from excellent research groups, why not provide a service that connects users who have specific, niche research or experimental questions with experts who authored these protocols, or teams with real practical experience, to bridge the final mile of implementation?

This idea also comes from my own pain point. As a postgraduate student, even when a supervisor is experienced, she or he may have no idea about the details of your research, and you may still have many operational problems in the real experimental process. I once paid others to solve my confusions—not to mention how difficult it is to find the right person. This kind of platform remains unsystematic and fragmented. For example, it is mixed across shopping platforms like Chinese Taobao and Xianyu, general Q&A forums like Zhihu and Tieba, and social media discussion boards like Rednote.

So, maybe this is a possible next step.

However, this is an initial idea based on a limited market survey. There are several challenges to consider, including confidentiality, IP protection, maintaining expert quality, pricing, and responsibility boundaries. Additionally, scientific problems cannot always be solved through a single consultation.

My takeaways from this experience

Actually, it was my first English interview. I prefer freestyle, but to show my respect for the final round—and at the same time arrogantly assuming that a 15-minute interview would be predictable—I used AI to help polish and structure my self-introduction and some specific questions based on my understanding from the first two rounds. As expected, I forgot my lines, so I can understand the outcome even though I am confident about this role.

This also reminds me that I had stepped into a misconception: I was trying to act like the candidate the interviewer wanted me to be instead of building a narrative around who I am.

And most importantly, be relaxed.


This experience also pushed me to reflect on my postgraduate learning journey. Some skills I can refine from it might include:

  • Self-learning ability. Since my research area is multidisciplinary, I was forced to learn many other things besides chemistry, biology, mathematics, and physics principles behind the big machines. I also explored machine learning and basic programming—not proficient in all of them, of course, but able to quickly adapt to different contexts.
  • Problem-solving ability. During the research process, experimental failure, missing data, and analytical errors were common issues. Overcoming them gave me the courage to take on more unknown challenges.
  • Optimistic mindset. I really resonate with the idea that I'd rather be optimistic and wrong than pessimistic and right. At one point, I worked on a project that seemed impossible for me, and I successfully submitted results based on the spirit that I could make it happen, even though it felt like garbage to me because I held little passion for my research direction and didn't even choose to publish it. Anyway, I will carry this mindset forward into all my future challenges.
  • Logical thinking and analytical ability. Scientific research requires hypothesizing, testing, and extracting patterns from massive amounts of data. I was trained to deal with uncertainty and complexity.
  • Time and energy management ability. Honestly, I did badly at that time. Because of my immaturity, I didn't know how to reject different requests from others that were unrelated to my main tasks, so I was placed in a situation where I was interrupted nearly every minute. As a result, my mental health was deeply affected, especially my prefrontal cortex (PFC) function. Over time, I realized it, made adjustments, and built my own efficient system, which now helps me manage priorities and deliver consistently.

Overall, this experience offered me a chance to carefully revisit my postgraduate years—a period that once triggered complicated feelings for me. Things become easier: take the useful lessons, keep the strength I built, and leave the rest behind. I do not want to keep explaining the past, but move forward, enter the market, and test my value through real work and real results.


Moreover, it also helped me understand myself better. I'm not just looking for a job title; I'm seeking a field that excites me, where I can grow, contribute, and make a positive impact. I feel most aligned with tech-enabled (alternative), cross-cultural, and client-facing environments, where I can use my technical skills, communication ability, and take ownership of my work. Clear workplace boundaries are important to me, because they make work healthier and more sustainable.
